He was influential in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Brighton
Manchester United beat Brighton 2-0 in the Premier League on Tuesday evening to give fans something to cheer about, following weeks of toxicity around the club.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first goal of the game and brought his six-game goal drought to an end in impressive fashion.
“That was an amazing goal,” Rangnick said after the game when asked about Ronaldo‘s goal.
“Not only an important one but an amazing goal.
“I think overall it was a good performance by Cristiano. Energetically, he was on there, he was always trying to help the teammates, so I think in the last weeks definitely the best performance by him and a very, very important goal for us.”
Ronaldo is United‘s top scorer this season with 15 goals, however he has cut a frustrated figure in recent weeks and has found himself in somewhat of a rut.
His six-game run without scoring is normal for most forwards, but Ronaldo demands so much of himself that he was visibly annoyed at himself in recent games.
Now, Rangnick will be hopeful that the win marks a change in the Red Devils‘ fortunes.
“It’s a big win, but we still have quite a few games to play,” Rangnick added.
“Today for a change we had a better second half than the first half and in the second half it paid off, we were more aggressive.
“We were primed to intercept and attack them in higher positions, so a highly important win for us.”
The best solution for an out-of-form forward is to score, and that is what Ronaldo did against Brighton.
However, recent reports of a division between Rangnick and Ronaldo will only be temporarily eased after the win lifted United into the top four.
The club will now want to put whatever differences there are to one side, as they face northern rivals Leeds United on Sunday before taking on Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie next Wednesday, February 23.
